How did you get started with your current business?

I was a PT/Group Ex instructor and after many years decided to focus on Tai Chi as a gentler form of exercise.

How would you describe your customers and community?

My 'students' are dedicated to learning Tai Chi and Qigong and often attend multiple classes a week. They enjoy the community spirit. The age range is from about 56–84 years old (my classes are during the day, so they suit retirees). They enjoy the challenge of learning something new.

Why do people choose your business over others?

We have 20 classes on the weekly timetable. A recent survey has indicated that word of mouth is the most common way people hear about RMTC. I also advertise in the local magazine. I am a qualified and experienced teacher so I know how to break down concepts so everyone has a sense of achievement after each class.

Which parts of your business do you manage? What do you outsource?

I manage all aspects of the business.

What advice do you have for others who may be thinking about opening a similar business?

Start small, consider what your point of difference could be and care about your customers.

What's the biggest mistake you've made in your business? How did you fix it?

I had 3 instructors taking beginner classes. Although they were trained, they didn't have the skills required to teach new students. Students started leaving, so I decided to facilitate all classes myself.

Do you have a specific goal or mission for your business?

To keep providing a quality service that people enjoy being part of.

Can you describe how you managed your business before Punchpass?

Excel Spreadsheets — until my son saw all the highlighted rows and columns. This was in 2019, when I had about 80 students.

Was Punchpass the first studio management software you tried or did you move from another platform?

My son researched a few studio management platforms and we met with several over Zoom. Punchpass was chosen because it seemed to be appropriate for a small business, it was reasonably priced and easy to use.

Is there anything else that you'd like to share?

If you have a passion, follow it. I didn't start RMTC until I was 55 — so it's never too late!
